Food waste, fish droppings and other nitrogen-containing organic matter are degraded to ammonium by bacteria during the nitrogen cycle, then to toxic nitrites. These are then transformed by other bacteria useful to become harmless nitrates in low concentration. In a well-functioning pond or aquarium, the nitrite content should be less than 0.3 mg / l. During the start-up phase of an aquarium or pond, that is to say when the nitrifying bacteria are not yet sufficiently developed, a regular check is essential in order to prevent poisoning. Keep out of reach of children.
